Studying in Japan

Japan is a great place to learn the language at its source and to experience its culture, from historic cities to manga and anime. You can choose a busy city like Tokyo or Osaka, a mid-sized city like Nagoya or Fukuoka, or a historic city like Kyoto. Each area offers a different lifestyle and cost of living, so we will help you find the right fit.

Preparations
| Language | Depending on your nationality and school, you may need proof of at least 150 hours of Japanese study or a Japanese test score. We will check what applies to you. |
|---|---|
| Visa | Short-term studies usually last up to 90 days and can often be done on a tourist visa, depending on your nationality. Long-term studies of 6 months to 2 years require a student visa, and we will help you prepare your documents. We recommend starting at least 6 months in advance. |
| Accommodation | We work with trusted share house and apartment partners. Most options open up around 3 months before your arrival. See Step 4 for our partners. |
| Costs | Tuition at Japanese language schools is around ¥600,000 to ¥1,300,000 or more per year. Living expenses are around ¥100,000 to ¥150,000 per month in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, and may be lower in smaller cities. Most students prepare ¥2,000,000 to ¥3,000,000 for a year of study and daily living. |
| Working part-time | With a work permit, students on a student visa can work up to 28 hours per week, and up to 40 hours per week during school breaks. |
